What is it used for?

DIGOXIN is used for the treatment of congestive heart failure and heart rhythm problems.

What should I discuss with my physician prior to taking this medicine?

Please do tell your physician if you have any of the following conditions:

  • certain heart rhythm disorders
  • heart disease or recent heart attack
  • kidney or liver diseasess
  • an unusual or allergic reaction to digoxin, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant
  • breast-feeding

How is this medicine should be taken?

Take it orally accompanied with a glass of water. It is best to take this medicine on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before, or 2 hours after meals. Your doses should be taken at the regular intervals. You should never take this medicine more often than prescribed.

Contact your pediatrician regarding the use of this medicine by children. Special care might be necessary.

Overdosage: If you suspect an overdosage, get in touch with the nearest poison control center or emergency room immediately.

NOTE: This medicine is only intended for your use. You should never share it with the others.

What to do if I missed a dose?

If you missed a dose, it should be taken as soon as possible. If the time has almost come for the next dose, only that one should be taken. You should never take double or extra doses; a single doze is sufficient for the purposes.

What are the possible interactions with the other medicine/food/etc?

  • agents used to treat cancer
  • alprazolam
  • antacids
  • beta blockers or calcium-channel blockers, often used for high blood pressure or heart problems
  • calcium, magnesium, or potassium salts
  • certain medicines used to decrease cholesterol, including cholestyramine or colestipol
  • clarithromycin or erythromycin
  • diet pills (stimulants) or drugs used to control weight
  • diphenoxylate
  • diuretics
  • indomethacin
  • itraconazole
  • medicines to control heart rhythm like dofetilide, amiodarone, sotalol, and others
  • metoclopramide
  • neomycin
  • propantheline
  • quinine
  • rifampin
  • sodium polystyrene sulfonate
  • spironolactone
  • succinylcholine
  • sulfasalazine
  • tetracycline antibiotics like doxycycline and tetracycline
  • thyroid hormones

Provide your physician with a list of all the medicine, including herbs and non-prescription drugs, or dietary supplements that you are using. Do let them know if you smoke, drink alcohol, or use any of the illegal drugs or drinks with caffeine or alcohol. Some of those items may also interact with your medicine, causing undesired consequenses. Please always consult with your health care professional prior to stopping or starting any of your medicines.

What should I watch for while taking this medicine?

Pay regular visits to your doctor or health care professional to undergo checks on your progress. Do not stop taking this medicine without the prior advice of your doctor or health care professional, even if you feel better. Do not change the brand of the medicine that you are taking, other brands may affect you differently.

You should check your heart rate and blood pressure regularly during the treatment course with this medicine. Inquire with your doctor or health care professional of what your heart rate and blood pressure should be, and under what circumstances you should contact them. Your doctor or health care professional also may schedule the regular blood tests and electrocardiograms to check your progress.

Watch your diet. Less digoxin may be absorbed from the stomach if you have a diet enriched with the bran fiber.

Do not treat yourself for coughs, colds or allergies without asking your doctor or health care professional for advice. Some ingredients used in those medications can increase possible side effects for this drug.

Does this medicine have any possible side effects?

The following side effects should be reported to your doctor or health care professional as soon as they are noticed:

  • allergic reactions like skin rashes, itching or hives,face, lips, or tongue swelling
  • changes in behavior, mood, or mental ability
  • changes in vision
  • confusion
  • fast irregular heartbeat
  • feeling faint or lightheaded, falls
  • headache
  • nausea, vomiting
  • unusual bleeding, bruising
  • unusual weakness or feeling tired

The side effects listed below usually do not necessarily require any medical attention (please do report them to your physician if they are recurrent or bothersome):

  • breast enlargement in men and women
  • diarrhea

Other side effects are also possible, the above list is not all inclusive.

Where should I store it?

Keep this medicine out of the children’s reach.

This medicine should be stored at the room temperatures between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). You should do your best to protect it from the light and moisture. Dispose of any unused medicine after the expiry date is reached.
